Animal Husbandry

Animal husbandry plays an important role in the National and State rural economy since Agriculture in India is dependent on livestock. In Bangalore Rural District people in rural are depending on Agriculture and dairying for their livelihood. The Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services is providing health care facilities through its institutions at various levels.

The Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services department was carved out of Agricultural Department in 1945 and since then functioning independently. Though in the older days the departmental activities were restricted to only animal health care but now the department has expanded its activities to Scientific Dairying livestock breeding, poultry management, Scientific Method of feeding, and management of Cattle, Buffalos, Sheep and Goat, Pig, Poultry, Rabbits, Fodder cultivation, Extension & Training activities, Implementations for Socio Economic programmes, Sample survey and Livestock Census . The ultimate goal of all these activities are to improve the production of milk, meat,egg, wool and enhance the economic status of the people and the country.

DEPARTMENTAL ACTIVITIES

1. Providing health coverage to livestock and poultry and prevention and control of diseases.
2. Enhancing Livestock and poultry production through scientific breeding, feeding fodder and managemental practices.
3. Organizing training programmes for farmers on modern animal husbandry practises through extension activities.
4. Implementation of various socioeconomic programmes including SCP & TSP, Pashubhaghya.
5. Conducting livestock census once in 5 years and sample survey for assessing the quantity of milk, meat, egg & wool throughout the year.
6. Improving the Poultry production.
7. Implementations of control of Animal Diseases (ASCAD) schemes.
8. Providing Insurance Coverage to bullocks, Cows Buffaloes at subsidised rate.
